  The Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, where Hou Huaixia works, responded that it did not constitute academic misconduct, and China Ocean University, the alma mater who awarded him his doctorate, recognized it as "not minor plagiarism". A professor from the Academic Committee of Haida University made it clear that Hou’s paper was flawed, but it was by no means plagiarized. "The survey materials are informative, and we are always waiting to report to the relevant departments."

  Yao Hongjun, who passed the judicial examination with a score of 272 and studied intellectual property law, was puzzled. In order to find out the facts, the information in his computer has been saved for several g’s, but it seems that the more information he has, the farther away he is from the truth.

  In fact, not only Yao Hongjun, but also the experts who participated in the evaluation are faced with difficulties: there are errors in duplicate checking of HowNet, manual evaluation is not trusted, and there is no unified standard for academic plagiarism … …

  Faced with this "plagiarism" appraisal, they are also thinking: when academic plagiarism is discussed overwhelmingly, what is the most accurate evaluation standard? Where is the boundary between plagiarism and non-plagiarism?

  Experts "deny" the results of the duplicate checking system.

  As a colleague, Yao Hongjun first paid attention to Hou Huaixia’s "suspected plagiarism" in May 2010. After reading a paper she published in a journal, he suddenly felt "some problems".

  He has read many articles by Hou Huaixia. "She has published many articles in a wide range of fields, including litigation law, advertising law, environmental law, intellectual property rights, foreign investment and corporate responsibility, but her research direction is relatively fixed, and the research in the legal field has been subdivided in 2000." In Yao Hongjun’s view, such a "multi-faceted attack" by Hou Huaixia is basically impossible.

  Yao Hongjun put many academic articles of Hou Huaixia into HowNet to check them again. Among them, Hou Huaixia’s doctoral thesis "Research on Environmental Rights and Their Relief in Private Law" is shown in the duplicate check report of HowNet, which coincides with the contents of 25 published papers.

  Hou Huaixia’s doctoral thesis has a total of more than 160,000 words. According to Yao Hongjun’s algorithm, these similarities account for at least 36% of this thesis.

  In 2010, China Ocean University, where Hou Huaixia graduated, promulgated the Measures for Handling Academic Misconduct of Postgraduates of China Ocean University, in which Article 10 states: The whole paragraph with the same content accounts for more than 30% of the whole academic achievement, or the academic achievement of others is regarded as the main part or substantial part of his own academic achievement, which constitutes serious plagiarism; It accounts for 10% and is not the main innovation, which also constitutes mild plagiarism.

  Yao Hongjun believes that these data show that plagiarism is a clear fact. However, the conclusion given by academic degree evaluation committee Office of China Ocean University is that Hou Huaixia’s doctoral thesis is not enough to constitute mild plagiarism; The conclusion of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law is that Hou Huaixia’s journal articles do not constitute academic misconduct.

  However, in the eyes of Li Qi, an expert who participated in the appraisal of Hou Huaixia’s thesis by the Academic Committee of China Ocean University, the figures in the duplicate checking report are not necessarily convincing.

  Li Qi admitted that "Hou Huaixia’s paper is flawed", but he also stressed that "this is by no means plagiarism".

  According to him, the duplicate checking of HowNet will mark the same sentences, but it can’t make a more subtle division. In particular, Hou’s doctoral thesis belongs to the category of law, which involves citing a large number of laws and regulations.

  In his impression, Hou Wenzhong was reported the same part, covering popular science narrative, news reports, and related laws and regulations, which should be comprehensively judged according to the actual situation.

  Compared with manual screening, its database is huge, the screening standard is unified, and the working cycle is short. In the face of an increasing number of papers, it ensures the review speed, and it has gradually become an irreplaceable "first line of defense" for academic screening.

He said that the similarity of the statistics of HowNet’s duplicate checking system can be used as a hint, and whether it constitutes plagiarism must be further identified and analyzed.

  Among the numerous academic misconduct, most of the targets of academic counterfeiting come from obvious plagiarists who directly carry other people’s works. As a more subtle way, "soft" plagiarism is not easy to attract people’s attention.

  Besides "softness", there is a broader category — — "Hidden" plagiarism. A student studying in a well-known domestic university revealed to the reporter of China Youth Daily and Zhongqing Online that his graduation thesis co-authored with his tutor was "occupied" privately by his tutor: abbreviated as a short paper, and secretly published in a journal in his own name. The tutor explained that only one author appeared as a "periodical requirement"; However, the journal responded that "this situation is basically impossible".

  Even for professional organizations and professionals, it is a difficult problem to identify and analyze plagiarism. For example, what can be the criterion for judging plagiarism in the middle zone where the boundaries are not clear?

  Li Qi’s method is to judge whether the author has put forward a new point of view. But the problem is, "the opinion machine can’t recognize it and needs to rely on human evaluation. But people are hard to be trusted. "

  They can only return to the software again, and the professor is helpless, "but the software can’t be error-free."

  In fact, in foreign countries, screening papers mainly rely on such anti-plagiarism detection systems. Turnitin is the most widely used system in foreign universities.

  Turnitin will compare the documents uploaded by users with the articles in the background database, calculate the proportion of similarity, and "original report" containing a lot of relevant information.

  But this system has an extremely huge database: over ten thousand different periodicals and magazines, millions of books and tens of billions of web pages. It also adopts intelligent corpus technology — — Even if you rewrite the original, it will be exposed.

  Can new technology detect old problems?

  Liu Huirong, who was written by Hou Huaixia in his doctoral thesis "Thanks", is now the Party Secretary of the School of Law and Politics of China Ocean University. Hou Huaixia said that Liu is his friend, former leader and colleague, and he gave himself a lot of encouragement during his reading.

  Liu Huirong told the China Youth Daily and Zhongqing Online reporter that in 2008, at that time, there was no means to check the defense in the college. The review of Hou’s thesis is the review of the content by the members of the defense team through several layers of comments.

  In her view, the problem is the report itself. "Hou’s doctoral thesis was published in 2008, and the whistleblower was detected by HowNet’s duplicate checking software in 2015. This is to detect past articles with current software and standards."

  She said that, firstly, the articles that HowNet detected as "reference" covered the articles published after Hou Wen’s publication, and it is hard to say who can learn from them; Secondly, the times are different, and it is not reasonable to trace and characterize the academic misconduct of past articles with the current standards. Even from a legal point of view, there is a saying that let bygones be bygones.

  In 2009, the Ministry of Education promulgated the Guidelines for Academic Norms of Humanities and Social Sciences in Colleges and Universities. In fact, after being accused of plagiarism, there are always universities and parties who respond: "The published papers were published earlier than the various specifications."

  Zhang Shiyou, a professor at the School of Politics of Chongqing Normal University, has been teaching for 21 years, and 10 papers have been accused of plagiarism. During this period, the title was promoted from lecturer to professor and transferred to another university. At least 8 of these papers "quoted" a large number of references at the end of the paper, and some almost all of them were composed of multiple references.

  Although it has long been strange, in Xiong Wenzhao’s view, "old problems cannot be traced back with new technology", the key point is to distinguish whether the main criteria for judging plagiarism have not changed for a long time — — For example, no matter what period, large-scale overlap is not allowed.

  Who is in charge of plagiarism or not?

  As a member of the Academic Committee of China Ocean University, Li Qi remembers that after receiving the report materials, the school set up an expert group, but it was a "heavy workload" to study Dr. Hou Huaixia’s thesis.

  From analyzing the paper to writing the report, Li Qi spent two whole days. Plus some procedures stipulated by the school, it took almost a month before and after.

  He studied all the relevant domestic and foreign norms, but found that there are still many vague areas that cannot be covered by the provisions. He even created a set of evaluation criteria, holding the paper "word by word", but whether the paper is plagiarized is still "a very difficult thing to define".

  "First of all, there is no regulation on plagiarism at home and abroad; Secondly, specific to each paper, hard standards do not work, depending on the situation. " He said that this process needs a lot of discussion and discussion, and there is no way to apply the duplicate checking system mechanically.

  He said that the Academic Committee of China Ocean University was "independent" and had gone through all the necessary procedures as required. He himself did not keep the detailed analysis report of Hou’s thesis.

  Moreover, identifying plagiarism is not just a difficult problem for colleges and universities. Many periodical articles reported by Yao Hongjun that Hou Huaixia was suspected of plagiarism were published before the publication of HowNet duplicate checking system.

This does not mean that they have succeeded. They also have many problems, but they dare to walk into the pit for the industry in the change cycle and insist on doing "extremely difficult and long-term correct things". Whether it is practitioners, partners or investors, it is worth deeply understanding what they are doing and why.

The discussion points involved in this meeting are:

Deepening the supply chain is not the best path

When it comes to the commodity supply chain, especially non-standard products such as fresh food, fruits, milk eggs, meat, fresh food, etc., Yonghui is often mentioned. Recently, several investors have asked how Yonghui’s supply chain advantages compare to Hema. Before answering, let’s quickly sort out the operation logic of the domestic non-standard commodity supply chain.

The source of the fresh supply chain is extremely complex, so I can only give a general idea here. For the upstream control, Yonghui is a type of representative, but also a minority. From the source to the processing center, to the logistics center and even the city warehouse, during this period, the origin inspection, quality inspection, price negotiation with small farms/cooperatives, repeated communication with a batch, logistics supplier selection, packaging material supplier selection, processing center operation management and personnel attribution, as well as deep processing capabilities, are mostly single-handed.

Hema, Walmart, etc., are another type of representative and mainstream. Most of these processes are outsourced to service providers, but the important links are strictly controlled, and special personnel are dispatched for regular inspection and evaluation. Some processing centers are self-employment models.Labor relations may be a form of outsourcing. Therefore, the Hema supply chain is indeed not as heavy as Yonghui, but it is also a mainstream choice, and the operations under different categories vary greatly.

Then analyze the source to the store step by step(Figure 2)Whether it is Yonghui talking directly or the service provider talking, the cost price is almost the same in terms of large-scale procurement. The difference occurs in the details of the process from the source to the store, including packaging material fees, processing fees, logistics distribution fees, loading and delivery methods, etc.

For example, cherries of the same origin and grade have a source purchase price of 20 yuan/catty. These processes are handled by the service provider. According to the price on arrival, the cost is increased by 15% to 16%.(About 24 yuan/catty)The cost of Yonghui doing it himself is 7% to 8%.(That is 21.5 yuan/jin)The loss is calculated separately, and the purchase amount is usually discounted according to the situation after the inventory at the store.

For Hema, we believe this asset-light operation has more advantages than disadvantages.The core of the supply chain is product selection and quality control. As long as the source price is relatively market-oriented and stable, whether the whole link needs to be personally invested and operated in depth, saving every penny. This approach of deep supply chain will have advantages, but it may also generate higher risks when supply and demand are unbalanced or encounter operational difficulties. It is said that Yonghui’s supply chain is strong, but there have been some quality problems recently.

To enhance the supply chain capabilities of commodities, especially non-standard commodities, deepening the supply chain is not the best path.In the future, the competition of supply chains will eventually return to people-oriented and data-driven. Nielsen, the world’s leading consumer research agency, can tell you which standard products sell best and what the average retail price is within a radius of 1 kilometer in big cities.

This is not enough. In the future hypermarket, you also have to know the daily consumption structure of all users within 1 kilometer, especially your members, what they often buy, what they are watching recently, and where is the price range? Today, Hema has this ability, because it is backed by the user portrait of 800 million DAU, and the ARPU value of comprehensive e-commerce. Tmall said that second, no one dares to say first, the granularity of data and the amount of data determine the effect of marketing based on portraits.

When it comes to member stores, it is interesting that both the world’s largest Costco and Germany’s largest Aldi are jokingly called "poor people’s supermarkets". This is of course a consumer joke. Costco covers almost the vast majority of households in the United States and has more than 100 million members worldwide(45% are supplementary cards, active payment number 6, about 2 million)And 90% membership renewal rate. Costco went public decades ago, and there are many articles analyzing its model, which will not be expanded here.

We briefly sort out the characteristics of its historical development and the core indicators of the three major member stores in the United States(Figure 3)Costco was formerly known as Price Club established in 1976, which as the name implies is "member discount store"In recent years, China’s rise of social e-commerce, community group buying, reverse customization, etc., are all concepts that others play with.

Price Club went public in 1980, opened its first store after Costco merged with Price Club in 1983, entered the overseas market in 1985, and did not establish its own brand Kirkland until 20 years later in 1995. By 2000, Costco’s annual revenue and membership were 31.60 billion US dollars and 15 million, SKU 3~ 4K, and nearly 10 years after the financial crisis, Costco’s CAGR has been 3 times that of Walmart, and by fiscal 2021, global revenue was 192 billion US dollars, which is about 40% of Walmart’s volume. After all, there are differences in Chinese and foreign consumer tastes, and the oversized packaging is not necessarily generally suitable for Chinese families. Furthermore, young Chinese families may be the most discerning consumers in the world.

In the short term, the knock-out products of the three major companies are indeed stronger than Hema, but the long-term decisive point cannot satisfy Chinese consumers with just a few dozen SKUs. This is the long-term opportunity of Hema, not to mention the 800 million MAU user base backed by Hema. In general, for this wave of incremental demand of at least 50 billion in 10 years, Hema X member stores occupy a very good first-mover position. In a third-tier urban area, if you use community group buying to buy food every day, you can save about 1K in living expenses per month, but this amount of money is exchanged for generally poor quality, very unstable quality, and basically no service.Even so, this is still a rigid demand model under the current lower-tier market purchasing power, but it is not a retail format suitable for Hema.

Facing the first-tier suburbs and lower-tier markets, Hema has the advantage of reducing the dimensionality output, saving 8% of the home performance cost, coupled with the adjustment of commodity strategy and the operation strategy of the neighborhood store, the same quality and quality assurance products of Hema store can be 15% off in the neighborhood, and some can be 30% off, but you have to order one day in advance and pick them up downstairs. In the past few years, on the front line, the regulars who were originally hypermarkets and vegetable markets have also turned to Hema, and when they reached the third line, Hema products have also been given a 20% discount. This is the market and crowd that the neighborhood should cut, and it is not the same market as community group buying. Moreover, in the short term, Hema does not allow neighborhood franchisees to do commissary business, and fully serves Hema members. The neighborhood has also opened a courier station. In the future, there may be opportunities to channel the annual access demand of billions of packages from the Cainiao system to the neighborhood, driving offline passenger flow and saving marketing costs. From the perspective of the UE model, we have interviewed the owners of several neighborhood stores. This cannot be solved by casually introducing some 3C products.

In the community group buying and selling 3C and other high-customer single goods, the scene itself does not match, secondly, can the price sell Pinduoduo? Can the service fight JD.com?The potential customer group of Hema has much higher price tolerance for fresh food and daily necessities than the customer group buying community.

Opening neighborhoods in first- and second-tier cities with sufficient density is an important supplement to Hema’s big stores, but it is indeed difficult to sink to second- or third-tier cities. Whether it is a single store or a front warehouse, or a small store, sufficient order density is required to support the supply chain and logistics warehousing costs.

We interviewed several senior supply chain and logistics experts in the retail industry. If the daily purchase amount of a single second-tier city is less than 0 yuan, it is difficult to support the reasonable operating cost of a logistics center. It is equivalent to opening 30 traditional retail stores or 150 front warehouses. This is why front warehouses are challenged in second-tier cities. The cost of pulling new products is high, the unit price of customers is reduced, and the retention is not as high as that of first-tier users. Second-tier city users are more price-sensitive.

Although the two cannot be directly compared, based on the single warehouse model, the daily order volume of a single warehouse is less than 1,000 orders, the unit price of customers is less than 90 yuan, or the density is insufficient. Any dissatisfaction is a huge challenge. IV. Internal operation management is a challenge for Hema, and independence is not necessarily a good thing

Furthermore, half of Hema’s staff comes from traditional retail, which is the rhythm of intensive farming every day, and the other half is a typical Ali people. Now that the front office is about to make a profit, it may not be a good thing to be independent.

After calculating, the cost of the middle and back office is about 7% to 8%, temporarily turn off unnecessary trials and errors, adjust the relevant operation personnel of the group, and the large-scale module developers temporarily return to Ali. The cost of a P8 developer in Hema is equivalent to 4 to 5 senior employees of the headquarters of traditional retail.

In addition, there are some unnecessary administrative expenses. Under such a simple adjustment, it is not a problem to save 3% to 4% of the middle and back-office costs. Closing stores is also an effective strategy to recover losses, and it is also the most reasonable adjustment for retail. Fifth, the loss of Hema is valuable, and the underlying logic is becoming clearer and clearer

Traditional retail stores have reached a period of historical change. In the next 10 years, the same will be waiting for death, random change will be sudden death, and the conservative strategy will be to continuously shrink the scale. But in fact, the demand is still there, but the level of demand has changed, the channels have changed, and the preferences have changed. On the way to explore new models, those who dare to innovate will be questioned.

When Convenience Bee first came out, traditional convenience stores were hardly optimistic. Now? It has opened more than 2,000 stores, although it is also stop-and-go, but on the way to expansion, it has not been refinanced for nearly two years. If it does not continue to improve, how can it afford to lose money?
